In R5, a user who wants to check on a database subscription can go to the Welcome page to find out if there are new or changed documents in the database. But what if developers could give their users a database monitor that would pop up a dialog wherever they were in Notes, and that could monitor for events in addition to new and changed documents? This article shows you how to do exactly that by taking you through the architecture and code of an example application (available for free download from THE VIEW’s Web site.) This application monitors a Trouble Reports database for items requiring immediate action by members of IT. When a document matching certain criteria appears in the database, the Tech Monitor program picks up the request and displays a dialog box on the screens of IT technicians, wherever they are in Notes.
